Cruising in Mosul
Update 10-29-2007: I should have been more verbose that this is a somewhat crackpot theory. I didn't mean in increase in Homosexuality per se, but prima facie. The idea was that in countries where women were treated as subhuman, sex with other men was more appealing. Now I think this is bogus. Instead I think that this kind of seedy homosexual behavior is more a result of living in a society of overbearing sexual repression. When you feel sexually oppressed you're more likely to find whatever kind of release you can, eg Senator "Wide-Stance" Craig (R). In a society where sex outside of marriage can result in death a little backyard buggery is to be expected. In a society where gay or bisexual sex is looked down upon (save for a few places) you can expect sex to take place in places like bathrooms and truck stops.

I have a friend in the US Army who's in Iraq right now. If you know me, you probably know who he is. He's kept in fairly good touch with me since he's been shipped off and one thing he keeps telling me is that Iraqi men are fags. Despite first instinct to dismiss this as a racial stereotype, I think there is something to this. He tells me that he was propositioned by male prostitutes several times in Iraq, and he has told me about other male-love stories in Afghanistan and Iraq. I have reached the tentative conclusion that in male-dominated societies where women are treated as subhuman, homosexuality is much more acceptable, or maybe unacceptable but is more common. The men feel bad about having sex with women, so it's much more acceptable to have sex with someone who is worthy, another man. Ancient Greece fits this theory, as (seemingly) do Muslim dominated countries.
Case in Point:
My friend was sitting in some bush doing observation/recon in Northern Iraq. His buddy, looking in the direction of nearby ruins, started laughing.
My friend asked, "What are you laughing at"?
"Check this out"
He looked through the scope and there were two Iraqi men fucking eachother in the ruins. They had a good laugh, and snapped some pictures with a digital camera. My friend was cool enough to send me the story and the pics. Props go to him. When he gets back, I owe him several rounds of booze.
prologue: debt has been paid.

i am a homosexual in the U.S
i am a homosexual in the U.S Army. i am currently serving in north mosul, iraq. i think that what the do and what they believe is there business and you putting them on blast is way out of your lane... its people like you that make it so hard for the average citizen to adapt to change. Like homosexuals, why should a person be haated for what he does behind closed doors.they do every thing you do so what makes them a bad person.look in the mirror 9 times out of 10 your being like for you are not, insteade of being hated, feared, disliked for who you are...
Mr. US Army soldier, first
Mr. US Army soldier, first I'm sorry that you have to live an oppressed, closeted life.
Second, I think you entirely misunderstood the post. Iraq, like most Islamic countries is sexually repressed. All I'm saying is that human desires are human desires - and when you repress people in one way, they find another way to satisfy their needs. The "don't ask don't tell" policy is only slightly less morally reprehensible than trying to find and eliminate gays in the military. We've already lost a number of good servicemen and servicewomen due to this backwards, hillbilly policy. Unfortunately as we've seen from prop 8 passing in California (and similar legislation in other States) America is not the intelligent country it needs to be to succeed in the world.
Third, the people in the photograph are Iraqis, not US soldiers. They are also very difficult to identify since you can hardly see their faces - so hopefully I'm not outting them to be stoned to death or whatever the punishment for buggery is.
Maybe when you get out of the military you could try talking Obama into changing the "support the troops unless they're gay" policy.
I'm also in Northern Iraq
I'm also in Northern Iraq (Mosul) and as a Gay US Army Soldier, I completely agree with you.
Ok, first of all, quit
Ok, first of all, quit crying and waving the oppressed homosexual flag here. This picture wasn't taken for the purpose for... or hidden agenda of... uncovering Iraqis as homosexuals to be "haated for." If it were heterosexuals banging about, or even deers fucking in the bushes, regardless of what the situation was, the picture was taken was to expose outside viewers the strange shit we saw doing recon operations. If some iraqi camera man took a snap shot of me doing a combat jack then hooah, he caught me, maybe I should have jerked off in "closed doors."
Which brings me to point two, they were fucking out in the public, on top of some ruins, next to a river. Closed doors my ass, any shit like this is going to be under intense scrutiny from outside observers. So I didn't put them on "blast," they did.
Thirdly, I have nothing to do with people failing to adapt to change, so shove that statement up your ass. If anything, these photographs can represent that homosexuality transgresses national borders and cultures.
I could make a lot more points here but I don't have the time nor desire, but its easy to see you're just as closed and one-tracked minded as the people you preach against. Oh and next time you decide to speak your mind, it helps to know simple grammar.
i am too! and you should im

That's the hottest thing
That's the hottest thing ever. Has it occurred that just cause this pic shows two dudes having it off doesn't mean all Iraqis are gay? These pics couldv'e been taken anywhere in the world. Stop generalising. I would love to see more of this! And to the guy who took the photos. You're a total homo, hope you had a good time watching xoxo
You didn't understand the
I really don't know how I
I really don't know how I came across this, but I gotta clear out few things!!!
I have to say that it is funny as... then again sad...
first, I'm an Iraqi (from Baghdad.... well... born and raised there anyway..)
2nd, Iraq is not an Islamic country (never was), in the last days and after the invasion, the news started calling it Islamic and showing the worse places, now and after the bombing, nothing left but shitty places (unfortunately)... the majority in Iraq are Muslims(as I am), but the government run by "what so called" democratic rules, not Islamic, so yes, it is not Islamic.
Sex outside marriage is death.. hhahahaha who told you that?
My cousins, my friends and others I know, had/have girlfriends (yes, they sleep together and not married and more likely will not get married). Not as openly as in the western societies but it does exist.
Plus, we do have a lot of working women(I mean prostitutes), but you have to be careful, and know the right places... same with working guys/men...
We had everything: dancers, working women (and men), Eastern bars(older that some countries in the region, yes the bar itself), and drinking was openly allowed until the last says of Saddam, it was banned in some places... I am not saying it is a good thing that we have prostitution, not proud of it or ashamed of it but trying to explain that we were just a normal country, in fact in the 80's we were the most developed country in the middle east..
Like many countries, we have gay people and straight. however, a part of our culture is so "what's the right word, hmmm let's say" against gay... so most of them are not open about it.
These photos might be true, might be an act... plus as you mentioned they were in the bushes so they were doing it behind doors (as much as they could). I mean in Iraq-now it s hard to rent hotel or go and do it in your car or at home...
Also could be soldiers or men away from family and don't have enough money to pay for working women, so it happens, even in America and don't tell me it doesn't...
As for gay guys coming to American soldiers, they could be escorts or looking for comfort...
American = have dollars/money, a chance to find work via some kind of reference. Also an American would be more open to the idea of someone being gay... I don't know...
so to cut it short... and my point..
we're not a gay nation, and not a gay free one. We are not pro gay, and some of us(including me) don't give a rat's ass about ones sexual orientations.
peace...
